The exceptions at a glance
August close, state on Sep 28, 2026 3 exceptions open 1 had no owner for 6 days Internal
The routing brief for the nine exceptions raised in the August close: who reviews each open one, when a response is due, and the Fig and Fennel sales tax mismatch of $1,340 that circulated for 6 days before anyone owned it. Prepared by the Tallgrove close lead for the reviewers and for the morning stand-up. It is updated each morning and read out at the stand-up. Issued Thursday, October 1, 2026.
This morning in numbers
The grid shows when each exception was raised. The busiest week was Sep 14, with four exceptions across Harbor Table, Copper Kettle, Fig and Fennel and Saltmarsh Grill. Fig and Fennel and Copper Kettle each raised one in the week of Sep 21.

Reviewers and what they hold
Every open exception has one named reviewer. The reviewer decides the treatment and the correcting entry. The client accounting manager routes and keeps the queue but does not decide treatment.
- Celeste DeverellManaging partner, Tallgrove Accounting Partners. Reviewer on 3 open exceptions
decides treatment and entry for each
- Tobias RennertClient accounting manager, Tallgrove Accounting Partners. Routes all 3 open exceptions and owns none as reviewer
- Desmond VandermolenOwner, Pennock Hospitality Group. Client response requested on 2 open exceptions
The three open exceptions
Six exceptions are resolved: one at Pennock Holdings, two at Harbor Table, and one each at Copper Kettle, Fig and Fennel and Saltmarsh Grill. The three still open are below, each with its entity, account, source, reviewer and response date.
| Entity | Account and issue | Source | Reviewer | Response due | State |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fig and Fennel | Sales tax liability, mismatch of $1,340 | Accounting ledger | Celeste Deverell | Due Sep 28, approve at the next stand-up | Assigned, entry in review |
| Copper Kettle | Cash, deposits in transit for the week of Aug 24, tied to the $6,400 difference | Point-of-sale deposit report | Celeste Deverell | Oct 6 | Client response requested |
| Saltmarsh Grill | Payroll evidence, register outstanding 20 days | Payroll register | Celeste Deverell | Oct 6 | Client response requested |
Open means the exception is not yet closed by the reviewer. The close status for an entity changes only after the reviewer approves.
Routing rules
These rules decide who gets an exception and by when. They are applied the morning an exception is raised.
- Log it
- Tobias Rennert records the entity, account, amount and source the same morning the exception is raised, with the source file attached.
- Reviewer by type
- A ledger entry or a treatment question goes to Celeste Deverell by name. It never goes to a shared inbox or to the bookkeeper and payroll specialist as a group.
- Client response
- When Pennock must answer, Tobias sends one request to the owner's office manager with a response date of 5 business days. The answer goes back to the same exception.
- No owner by the next stand-up
- Any exception with no named reviewer by the stand-up after it was raised is read out first and assigned in the room.
- Closing
- Celeste Deverell records the treatment and the entry, and the exception is closed. The entity close status changes only after her approval.
"Both of them looked at it and both were right that it was not theirs. The routing rule exists so that someone with authority is named before the second look."
Tobias Rennert, Client accounting manager, Tallgrove Accounting Partners
Are exceptions getting fewer?
The chart compares exceptions raised per entity in the July close and the August close. Pennock Holdings and Harbor Table held steady. Copper Kettle fell from 3 to 2. Fig and Fennel and Saltmarsh Grill stayed at 2 each. The total fell from 10 in July to 9 in August.
Fewer exceptions is not the goal by itself. The test is whether each one that is raised reaches a named reviewer quickly.
